On Friday, Union HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ announced relaxation in the eligibility criteria for admission to the IITs. The relaxation in IIT admission criteria is observed in the view of partial cancellation of class 12 exams by several boards due to COVID-19 pandemic.
Qualified candidates who have passed class 12 examinations irrespective of their marks will now be eligible for admissions irrespective of marks obtained.

In a tweet, the HRD Minister said: “For admissions to #IITs, apart from qualifying the #JEE (Advanced), the eligibility was to secure either minimum score of 75% marks in class XII Board exams or rank among the top 20 percentile in their qualifying examinations.”
In another tweet, he further said, “Due to the partial cancellation of class XII exams by several Boards, Joint Admission Board (JAB) has decided to relax the eligibility criterion for #JEE (Advanced) 2020 qualified candidates this time”.
“Qualified candidates who have passed class 12 examinations will now be eligible for admissions irrespective of marks obtained,” he added.
For admissions to IITs, apart from qualifying the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE)-Advanced exam, the candidates are required to secure either minimum 75 per cent marks in class 12 board exams or rank among the top 20 percentile in their qualifying examinations, JEE-Mains, the qualifying test for JEE-Advanced is also conducted for admission to various engineering colleges across the country.
Due to the prevailing COVID-19 situation, the boards have announced their respective results using alternative assessment schemes based on performance in exams already conducted or internal assessment.
Keeping the same in mind, the Joint Admission Board (JAB) has decided to relax IIT admission criteria for the students.
After being postponed twice, the JEE Mains examination will now be held from September 1-6, while the JEE Advanced exam, which is conducted by the IITs, is scheduled to be held on September 27.
