University Grants Commission or UGC has issued a fresh set of guidelines regarding online courses offered by the universities. Earlier, it allowed only up to 20% courses per semester to be offered by the university in online mode. But after the recent notification, universities are allowed to offer 40% of the semester courses online.

This means that students will now be able to take up around 40 percent of courses per semester in their universities online, as per the new directive of UGC. The credit framework for online learning courses can be provided through Study Webs of Active Learning for Young Aspiring Minds, SWAYAM, which is India’s Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) platform.
UGC uploaded a Gazette notification on its official Twitter handle, in which it stated that institutions have been asked to amend their rules and regulations within four weeks for “seamless integration through SWAYAM based online courses.”

The Commission further said, “Every higher education institution shall within four weeks from the date of publication of these regulations in the official Gazette make the necessary amendments, as may be required, in their statutes, ordinances, rules, and regulations to adopt and incorporate the provisions of these regulations for seamless integration through SWAYAM based online courses.”
It also added, “No university shall refuse any student for credit mobility of courses earned through SWAYAM platform.”
The schedule of the SWAYAM online credit courses will be equivalent to the conventional semester commencing in the month of January and July. The online credit courses will be provided through the host institution that will issue the certificate with grades after the end term proctored examination for credit transfer. The parent college shall designate a faculty member to guide the students from registration until completion of the credit course.
Over the last year, the students in the country have had to continue their education through the online mode only due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This new blend of offline and online education is only going to make sure that the students will get the best teaching based on their convenience.
