Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is also the Chancellor of the Visva-Bharati University, Shantiniketan, West Bengal is going to address its students, teachers and staff on December 24, 2020 at 11 am during the virtual centenary celebrations of the university. PM Narendra Modi will attend the event as the chief guest. Along with him, Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ and Governor of West Bengal Jagdeep Dhanker will also be present. The event will begin at 10 am and will also be live-streamed on the official Twitter handle and Facebook page of Mr. Pokhriyal.
PM Modi has previously confirmed his attendance in the event on December 23, 2020 in a tweet saying, “Looking forward to addressing the centenary celebrations of the iconic #VisvaBharati University, Shantiniketan, among our premium centres of learning which is closely associated with Gurudev Tagore. Do tune in tomorrow, 24th December at 11 AM.”

A Brief History of Visva-Bharati University –
Earlier a release by PMO on December 22, 2020 had given a brief history of the University in honour of it completing a hundred years. The release said, “Founded by Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore in 1921, Visva-Bharati is also the oldest Central University in the country. Visva-Bharati was declared to be a Central University and “an Institution of National Importance” by an Act of Parliament.”
“The University followed the pedagogy devised by Gurudev Tagore, though gradually it evolved in the format in which modern Universities developed elsewhere.”, the release further added.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Prime Minister also addressed the centenary celebrations of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) and released a postal stamp during the event as well.
“In the last 100 years, AMU has also worked to strengthen India’s relations with many countries of the world. The research done here on Urdu, Arabic and Persian languages, research on Islamic literature, gives new energy to India’s cultural relations with the entire Islamic world,” PM Modi applauded the contribution of AMU in strengthening and representing the culture of India during his virtual address.
